Engagement Ring ScamsAlso, be careful that the jeweler doesn’t switch stones on you. It’s highly doubtful that this would occur, but you can never be too careful. Cubic zirconia has always been a common imitation of a diamond, but
there’s an even better imitation of a diamond, which is called moissanite.
Ask the salesperson or the jeweler if the stone is a genuine diamond.
Depending on where you are buying your ring, you should check the setting
and the mount; if the ring is cubic zirconia, they are sometimes set in
cheap quality metals. Take the ring to a well-known jeweler to check out
the ring too. If the ring has a lot of scratches, that might be a sign of
it being an inferior stone since diamonds are very durable. And as
mentioned previously, you want to get it certified.
If a store offers a lot of financing, that usually means that they’ve
already overpriced the jewelry, so you want to be careful of that. If
they offer a huge discount on the discount, be a little cautious to jump
for the deal. Check to see if the ring is genuine and if the setting is
also what you want it to be and get it certified.
Tips on fake diamonds
Here are a few tips to know if you’re trying to discover if your ring is
a fake. This only works when the ring isn’t set yet. If you place a
diamond over a book or a newspaper and you can see the words clearly, yet
distorted, it’s not real. A real diamond would refract too much light
for you to even see through it. Or if you put it up to the light, there
shouldn’t be any other color coming out except for white light.
Another thing, you need to get over is the belief that diamonds are
perfect. Diamonds tend to have flaws in them, and it might be a little
odd if a diamond has no flaws, except if it is considered an F1or IF. So
if your stone is completely flawless, you want to get that checked out
since fake diamonds are usually flawless.
Don’t go overboard on hitting your diamond ring trying to figure out if
it’s a fake. Diamonds can get fractured, and if it does, it could lose a
good portion of its value.
